The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has launched its most ambitious advertising campaign to date, titled #KeepAdvancing. This initiative aims to rally both new and returning supporters to help combat ongoing racial injustices in America.
Launched in October, the #KeepAdvancing campaign seeks to reconnect with donors who previously supported the NAACP during the heightened awareness of racial issues following the Blackout Tuesday protests in 2020. Despite a surge in donations during that period, the organization has seen a significant drop in financial backing, with only one in three donors expected to return in 2024, as reported by AdAge.
Reigniting the spark for social justice
In light of this decline, the NAACP is calling on past supporters and new allies to help reignite the momentum behind its mission. The campaign emphasizes the importance of continued advocacy for social justice and Black equity, particularly as many corporations are retracting their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives.
Visual storytelling and community engagement
The #KeepAdvancing campaign features a powerful visual component, produced by Eleanor, the first and only Black woman-owned production company in the U.S. and U.K. Directed by Candice Vernon, the advertisement recreates the Blackout Tuesday protest, inviting viewers to reflect on the ongoing fight for justice.
This campaign not only highlights the NAACP’s current initiatives but also calls for collective action on pressing issues such as affordable healthcare, gun control, substance abuse programs and access to clean drinking water.
A call to action from leadership
In a statement made during the campaign’s announcement, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson expressed his commitment to leading the organization into a new era of inclusivity. He stated, “To stay at the forefront of the fight, we must widen the margin of inclusivity and invite all to participate in progress because advancement is a right that benefits everyone.” Johnson emphasized that this campaign marks just the beginning of a broader movement.
Blankson echoed this sentiment, stating that the #KeepAdvancing movement allows the NAACP to expand its reach and engage more allies in the fight for justice.
How to get involved
Those interested in supporting the NAACP can visit the organization’s website to donate or become a member. The NAACP is actively seeking individuals and corporations to join their cause and help drive meaningful change.
