Chloe Bailey is just the latest woman to fall for Nigerian charm

All the hype this week has been about Burna Boy and Chloe Bailey. The couple has been enjoying “Detty December” in Lagos, Nigeria and everybody is obsessed with this new love — and understandably so. Burna Boy has been spoiling Bailey since the moment she touched down in Nigeria. The reaction also brought back an undeniable truth about Nigerian men: the ladies love us — and for good reason.

She hopped off the plane to 1000 roses from Burna Boy and picked up in chauffeured Rolls Royce. The Nigerian singer was seen putting his signature ODG diamond necklace around Chloe’s neck, and she hasn’t taken it off since. There were videos on social media that showed the celebrity duo holding hands and having loved-up moments at a nightclub in Lagos. She has been enjoying her time with Burna Boy, giving passenger princess vibes as she rides in his Ferrari.

Nigerian men know how to treat a woman. They are very giving, especially when they are in love. Whether that means gifts like flowers or jewelry or even straight cash — like we saw during the “Apologize like a Nigerian” trend on TikTok — Nigerian men love to spend on their loved ones. Nigerian men are also real alpha men, and I believe that’s what impressed the women the most about Burna Boy and Bailey. Women love a manly man; seeing the way Burna Boy opened every door, led her by holding her hand everywhere they went and just give the overall aura of protection while Bailey is in a foreign land, really turned women on.

We’ve also elevated ourselves to the top of pop culture. We’ve come a long way from being called “African Booty Scratchers” in elementary school. No matter what segment of society you turn to, there are successful Nigerians. We are one of the most educated ethnicities in the U.S.: a 2017 study showed that 61 percent of Nigerians had at least a bachelor’s degree. In entertainment, Nigerians dominate as well. Damson Idris (“Snowfall”) and John Boyega (Star Wars) are two of our biggest Hollywood stars. In music it’s not even a debate about our influence; Burna Boy of course, but Wizkid, Davido and Asake are four of the biggest artists in the world, each selling out stadiums in every country. Sports? We got that too; Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the best power forwards of all time, Anthony Joshua had a stellar career, and Kamaru Usman and Israel Adesanya were both the faces of UFC at a point.
Chloe is only the latest on a long list of women to fall for the Yoruba or Igbo charm. Lori Harvey, Stefflon Don and Nia Long have all been attached to a Nigerian man at some point; whether it ended well or badly, they won’t deny the relationship had its great moments. Yes, we have flaws; if you’ve heard the Yoruba demon or Igbo demon stories that were viral a while back, Nigerian men have also provided their share of heartbreak. But all in all, we are great men to have relationships with because we are hardworking, responsible and committed to our families.
Get you a Nigerian man — like Bailey, I promise you won’t want to go back.
