Lawrence Lamont is the director of one of the most star-studded films of 2025, One Of Them Days. The movie stars two of the biggest stars in the world, Keke Palmer in film and SZA in music. The movie releases next Friday, Jan. 17, and on Jan. 8, we got a chance to see an early screening of the film and it was hilarious. Lamont was live at the Atlanta tastemaker’s screening at Regal Cinema in Atlantic Station, where rolling out caught up with him to discuss arguably his biggest movie yet.
Why did you make this movie?
I mean, I wanted to make this movie because it’s so rare that we see original films — let alone a film with two black women leads like this. So, you know, we in a day and age where, you know, it’s part six, it’s part sevens, part eights, we got sequels on sequels and IP on IP, where I grew up watching movies that were originals and those are the films that made me want to make films. So that’s one of the big reasons.
Was it intentional casting Keke Palmer and SZA?
Yeah, so like, Keke was attached when I got attached like four years ago, literally. And we went through a lot of auditions for the Alyssa character. We just, we didn’t know yet. But then once we got SZA in, it was like, this is perfect. Like, she’s already Alyssa. Like she embodies Alyssa in real life and Keke embodies Dreux in real life. So it was a no brainer. And plus, what they both bring, like you said, biggest superstar in acting, biggest pop star right now in music. So I think bringing them together just makes it more appealing to audiences. And then when they sit down and see that they both did a great job, maybe they tell their friends and go see it again.
What’s your favorite SZA song?
Oh, man. Well, see, I just heard the new album. It’s got to be something off the new album, I’m going to go with. I mean, I love “Saturn.” But off the new one, I’m going to say I like “Crybaby.” And damn, what’s the name of that song? And I like “Kitchen” too.
What’s your favorite Keke Palmer film?
