Marcus Freeman can fix Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears

Don’t overcomplicate this, Freeman is the correct choice to be the Bears’ next head coach

Marcus Freeman is enjoying a magnificent start to 2025. Last week, he led Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff Championship, becoming the first Black head coach to do so. He also became the first Asian head coach to lead a time to the championship game as well. Regardless of whether he wins the College Football Championship, Freeman could be looking at some more good news.

It has been rumored that the Chicago Bears are interested in interviewing and making Freeman their next head coach. They have already done “extensive” research on him and plan to interview him after the National Championship game. This just might be the fix Caleb Williams desperately needs. No exaggeration, it could save the young QB’s career.

Everything went south for Williams with the Bears this season. He was the most hyped NFL prospect in years, due to the media and his own mouth, and to say he failed to live up to it would be an understatement. The one thing we can’t say though is that Williams is a bad QB. Despite the Bears only going 5-12, Williams put up respectable numbers for a rookie. He finished the season with 3,541 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns. It probably doesn’t seem all that impressive until you compare it to rookie of the year favorite Jayden Daniels rookie stats; he recorded 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdowns — a lot closer than you thought, I’m sure. The talent is there, what Williams really needs is a coach to guide him and Freeman would be the perfect choice.

We already know that Freeman can turn around a program, he’s done that twice in as many stops in college. He deserves the opportunity to do the same in the pros. Freeman joined Cincinnati as its defensive coordinator for the 2017 season after serving as a graduate assistant at Ohio State, a linebackers coach at Kent State, and a linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator at Purdue. In 2016, the squad finished 4-8, but he and head coach Luke Fickell helped turn it around and make it a contender for college football.

His years of work finally broke through as Cincinnati made it to the Peach Bowl in Freeman’s final season as the defensive coordinator. He helped make Cincinnati a powerhouse and that was proven in the first year following his departure to become Notre Dame as they actually made the College Football Playoffs for the first time in their history. The move was a smart one for Freeman because once Brian Kelly left for LSU in 2021, he took over as head coach of Notre Dame after just one season as the defensive coordinator.

His time as Notre Dame’s head coach has been an instant success. Freeman is now in his third season as head coach at Notre Dame, and his record with the team is now at 34-9. Notre Dame and Freeman will now face Ohio State — Freeman’s alma mater — in the championship game.

We know coach Freeman is an excellent coach on the field, but he has also proven to be an excellent leader. Having a strong Black man in the room to help Williams navigate his NFL journey would be a big benefit to the young QB. A lot of Caleb’s early issues were due to his immaturity, and Freeman will nip those bad habits in the bud immediately. Plus who wouldn’t want to see the Black trifecta in the NFL once again? They already have a black general manager in Ryan Poles, and a Black QB in Williams of course. Why not complete the trinity with a Black head coach? The Bears don’t need to overthink this one. The best coach for your franchise is Marcus Freeman, get him before another NFL team does.
