Why do cultural date nights like Black Creativity matter?

Find out why cultural events like the Griffin MSI Black Creativity Gala make for great date nights for couples

Date nights and shared experiences are essential for nurturing a strong, healthy relationship. Whether it’s a casual evening out or a grand affair, spending time with your significant other fosters deeper connections and reinforces mutual goals. In that spirit, we asked four couples at the 55th annual Black Creativity Gala at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry to share why attending an event like this together is important. Their insightful responses reveal the value of stepping beyond everyday routines to celebrate art, culture, and each other’s company.

Mr. and Mrs. Dye, celebrating Black Creativity

Mrs. Jasmine Dye: “It’s important to come together as a Black couple because this gives us an opportunity to be with like-minded Black individuals and celebrate what feels underrepresented — art and creativity. For us, it’s not just about supporting, but actually showing up. One of our favorite exhibits features high school students who get to showcase their accomplishments in front of their families, which really boosts their confidence. Where else can they have that opportunity?”

Mr. Rythus Dye: “With it being Black History Month, it’s very important for our culture. It’s important to celebrate our history, to give back, and to show kids couples and families coming out to support them. That’s why we love coming.”

Mr. Patterson: “Just to celebrate Black love and Black success. We need a symbol in our neighborhoods showing that Black love can lead to success, togetherness, strength, and family.”

Mr. Patrick Brutus: “For people to appreciate arts and culture, it’s best to do it with your life partner so you can share the same experience in real time. This is our first year at Black Creativity, and we’re excited it’s at the museum.”

Mrs. Rachelle Brutus: “Supporting Black art is something we all need to do. By being here, we’re doing our part to make sure artists are front and center.”

Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Cristal Gary

Mr. Thomas Gary: “We both like to support art and our culture, and enjoying that together as a couple brings us closer. Supporting Black art, especially in these times, is important—and so is showing Black love. Resilience is something we’ve had for centuries. It shows up in our creativity and how we love. When couples demonstrate that resilience, we’re able to withstand adversity and show others how to lean on that strength. This might be new to some, but it’s not new to us.”
