Kendrick Lamar was the big winner at this year’s BET Awards. The ceremony continues to be one of the most prestigious celebrations of Black entertainment and culture in the industry.
The 37-year-old rapper and singer won five prizes at the ceremony, which took place at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater on Monday night (09.06.25), including Album of the Year for GNX, Best Male Hip Hop Artist, and he and SZA scooped the Best Collaboration gong for their tune Luther. This marks Lamar’s most successful single night at the BET Awards, solidifying his position as one of hip-hop’s most celebrated contemporary artists.
Kendrick also won the Video of the Year prize for Not Like Us, and he shared the Video Director of the Year gong with Dave Free. The collaboration between Lamar and Free has produced some of the most visually striking music videos in recent years.
“I ain’t been here in a long time, but I always kept it in my heart,” he said while accepting the Album of the Year accolade. “BET always makes sure it’s representing the culture right. I’ll always give my heart to BET.” His heartfelt speech resonated with the audience and demonstrated his deep appreciation for the platform.
“SZA in the crowd. We on tour right now, please come to the show,” Kendrick gave a shout out “first and foremost” to God, before acknowledging his pal SZA. Their ongoing collaborative tour has been receiving critical acclaim across multiple cities.
SZA also won Best Female R+B/Pop Artist, and Chris Brown secured the male equivalent. Brown’s continued success in the R&B category showcases his enduring popularity and musical versatility across different styles and genres.
He also scooped the Viewer’s Choice Award for ‘Residuals’. This award highlights the strong connection between artists and their fanbase, demonstrating the power of audience engagement in today’s music landscape.
Doechii was named Best Female Hip Hop Artist, and she took a pop at US President Donald Trump in her acceptance speech. Her bold stance reflects the BET Awards’ tradition of providing artists with a platform for social and political commentary.
“Trump is using military forces to stop protest,” speaking about the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles – where Trump has sent around 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines – she said. “I want y’all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us.” Her powerful words sparked discussions about civil rights and governmental response to peaceful demonstrations.
What’s more, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Kirk Franklin, and Snoop Dogg were all honored in the BET Ultimate Icon Award category. These legendary figures represent decades of excellence in entertainment, each having shaped their respective fields in profound ways.
Other big winners on the night included Denzel Washington scooping Best Actor, and ‘Wicked’ star Cynthia Erivo won the female equivalent. Washington’s recognition continues his streak of acclaimed performances, while Erivo’s win highlights her impressive transition from Broadway to Hollywood stardom.
Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter – who made her feature film debut in 2024 motion picture Mufasa: The Lion King – won the Youngstars Award. Her achievement represents the emergence of the next generation of entertainment talent from iconic musical families.
In the sports categories, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts took home the Sportsman of the Year Award, and pro basketball player Angel Reese was named Sportswoman of the Year. These athletes have made significant impacts in their respective sports while also serving as positive role models in their communities.
The evening featured spectacular performances that showcased the diversity and richness of contemporary Black music. Artists across genres delivered memorable moments that will be talked about for months to come.
Fashion was another highlight of the ceremony, with attendees displaying everything from classic elegance to cutting-edge designer pieces. The red carpet served as a showcase for emerging designers and established fashion houses alike.
The ceremony reinforced BET’s mission to celebrate Black excellence across all entertainment sectors. From music and film to sports and activism, the awards recognized individuals who have made meaningful contributions to their fields while inspiring others.
Social media buzzed throughout the evening as fans shared their favorite moments and celebrated their favorite artists’ victories. The interactive nature of modern award shows allows audiences to participate in real-time discussions about the ceremony’s highlights and surprises.
