What inspired you to create the Go DJ Awards?
I did this to help the artists that live here in the city of Houston. We have a full package of talented local, national, and up and coming artists that I wanted to expose.
What is the selection process?
We send out an early memo announcing the nomination season. My team — Vick Gotti (Go DJ Global Business), D. Scott (Live House Media) and Velma Trayham (Thinkzilla PR) — works so hard and can’t always know who’s making noise in the industry, so we give the opportunity for the business community and the entertainment community to tell us who the new hot artists are. We let the city of Houston decide and submit the nominations. Once the nominations are in, we send out the voting ballots for a winner to be selected.
Has the transition from deejay to business mogul been a difficult one?
I’ve taken bits and pieces from people that I’ve worked with for years. I have a business minor and I’m taking my knowledge and experience and I’m running with it. To come from being in the entertainment industry to behind a desk, I’m loving it! Either way it goes, I will continue to do both. I’m going to keep my buzz in the streets but I’m going continue to build a platform behind this desk, as well.
What can we expect from the Go Dj Awards this year?
I want to say first off that we have so much love for the guys over at Warehouse Live who gave us the opportunity to host our first event at their location, which helped to get us to the point where we are now. This year, we are expecting such a huge turn out that we have moved to the NRG Center. I am very comfortable with the venue, which has helped to give this event even more influence in Houston as to how quickly this event has grown. On Monday, July 23 at 6 p.m., we will bring the wow factor! This year, we have taken our production, staging and lights to a new level that pays homage to Houston’s larger-than-life reputation. Our special guests include Bun B, Sauce Twinz, Kirko Bangz, Miss Mykie, Bryan Michael Cox, and Jhonii Blaze who will walk the newly expanded 50 foot red carpet, which will be inside the venue this year. We will also be introducing the special community leader tribute where we will honor the publisher of the Forward Times, Karen Carter Richards; Craig Joseph Sr., owner of This is It Soul Food and Fox 26 News Anchor Isiah Carey.
