Louisiana native Dee-1 is in a great mood. And why shouldn’t he be? The rhymer just inked a brand new deal with RCA, and he sat down with RO to explain why he decided to make the leap from indie sensation to major label star, and why RCA was where he decided to set up shop.
Silver Spoon Brun had all of the resources at his fingertips to become involved in the music business. His uncle, Grammy winning producer/engineer Corey Rooney, was crafting hits for superstar artists, and the young boy from Queens began to pay more attention to what his uncle and his famous friends were up to. “I’d been watching my uncle doing music around great artist like Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige. I just fell in love with that at a young age.”
One individual who was important to the real TLC story is Crystal Jones. Jones founded TLC (originally 2nd Nature) with Tionne Watkins and Lisa Lopes, the future T-Boz and Left-Eye, but was unceremoniously ousted early on in favor of Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. The film portrays Jones as a talentless footnote to the group’s beginnings, and she spoke to RO about the way the film portrayed TLC and her history.
Adrian Marcel remembers exactly what album and what artist inspired him to become a singer. The R&B star from East Oakland knew that he was destined to be a performer after he heard Ginuwine’s 1998 album 100% Ginuwine. “That’s when I knew for sure that [music] was where I wanted to go,” he recalls. “I was always into music but that was around the age when you start liking girls, and I realized you get girls from singing.
