A former football player at FAMU was killed by police while seeking help after a car accident. According to reports, Jonathan Ferrell was unarmed when police racially profiled him in Charlotte, N.C.
Ferrell was initially involved in a one-car accident during the early morning hours of Sept. 14. After crashing into a tree, Ferrell climbed out of his vehicle and walked a half of a mile to the closest home he could find. He knocked on the door seeking help, but a woman at the home viewed him as a criminal and called police.
Once police arrived at the scene, Ferrell ran towards the officers with the hopes that they would help him get medical assistance. However, the police also viewed Ferrell as a suspect and tried to stop him with a taser.
Officer Randall Kerrick fired several shots at Ferrell and killed him at the scene.
It was later discovered that Ferrell was in a car accident and only looking for help before he was racially profiled. Police have charged Officer Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter for using excessive force. But Kerrick is home after bonding out of jail for $50,000.
Ferrell attended FAMU and played on the football team in 2009 and 2010.
