It should be a rites of passage that every American, most particularly blacks, to take a tour of many of the most famous monuments dedicated to civil rights around the country. It would help put into perspective the daunting challenges and obstacles — and endless peril — African Americans faced to eke out equality and justice in America.
As Black History Month 2013 approaches, let’s take a look at some of the most important monuments and symbols that became legendary in helping to turn the tide for an oppressed people.
