The mentourist is a badge of honor and nickname given to do-gooder Inez Nelson who’s on a mission to “expose professionals and youth to immersive vacation experiences through voluntourist opportunities.”
The founder of Immersion Excursions, a boutique-styled travel agency with a social purpose, has planned a “traveling and giving” trip to the Dominican Republic this Memorial Day Weekend.
IE partnered with the Mariposa DR Foundation for its third voluntourist vacation to be held on May 24-28, 2012 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
“We want our clients and the places they visit to be marked as an amazing experience that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives,” offers Nelson. “We seek unique experiences that you won’t find in any guidebook and partner with organizations that share our innovative mindset.”
Virally promoted on Twitter using the hashtag #giveandgetmore, the voluntour opportunity’s beneficiary, The Mariposa DR Foundation, affiliated with Nike’s Girl Effect, provides sustainable and creative solutions to poverty with a special focus on empowering girls to achieve their full potential. “Partnering with Immersion Excursions allows us to show visitors steps that the people in our community are taking to overcome some of the obstacles this country faces when you step outside of the resorts,” says the organization’s executive director, Patricia Thorndike Suriel.
The trip is a unique experience to relax and have fun. Highlights of the all-inclusive itinerary include the welcome topic party, land and water tours of Puerto Plata and Cabarete, and a volunteer experience focused on developing community-based solutions to poverty. –yvette caslin
