A tragic chapter in the life of an Oscar-winning actress has finally come to a close. William Balfour, the estranged brother of singer Jennifer Hudson was found guilty Friday of three counts of first-degree murder. After 18 hours of deliberation, a grand jury delivered the verdict that could land the 31-year-old in prison for the rest of his life. In addition to the murder charges, Balfour was found guilty of aggravated kidnapping, home invasion, residential burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle. The singer and her fiancé David Otunga were in court while the verdict was read.

In October 2008 Hudson’s mother and brother were found shot to death in their Chicago home. Days later Hudson’s nephew Julian King, 7, was found dead inside a vehicle miles from the family’s home. Balfour pleaded not guilty to the murder charges in 2009.

With the situation behind her Hudson and her sister, Julia, Balfour’s estranged wife, have released a statement expressing their thanks to God. “We have many people to thank, but our first thank you is to God, always.”
