Two days after her son, Jovan Belcher, killed his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and then turned the gun on himself at the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice facility, Cheryl Shepherd granted temporary guardianship of her granddaughter, Zoey, to her maternal family living in Austin, Tex.
The signed letter obtained by The Post reads: “I, Cheryl Shepherd, who has custody of child Zoey Michelle Belcher . . . hereby grant temporary guardianship . . . to Sophie Deon Perkins” — Kassandra’ cousin.
“This temporary guardianship will be allowed until the requested paperwork for joint custody between Cheryl Shepherd and Sophie Deon Perkins has been determined through the court system.”
The letter was signed by Perkins, Shepherd, a witness and a notary.
It’s a move that experts predict will make it hard for Shepherd to reverse. Her orphaned four-month-old grandbaby has a hefty bounty hanging over her head – her estimated net worth is $3 million. Shepherd is now seeking custody of Zoey.
Shepherd was in the home shared by the couple when the shooting occurred on Dec. 1, 2012. In mid-December, she filed a petition seeking to be appointed guardian and conservator of the estate.
