It’s official — Jennifer Hudson is heading to Broadway.

For months now, rumors have circulated that the Oscar and Grammy winner will make her big debut in the John Doyle revival of “The Color Purple.” However, she won’t be playing who you expected.

Although The New York Post mistakenly reported that Hudson will take on the role of Celie, Broadway.com reports that Hudson is actually poised to play Shug Avery, a sultry blues singer.

In 2013 Doyle, best known for his own Broadway debut “Sweeney Todd” in 2006, first opened his production “The Color Purple” in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

This will make Hudson’s first musical theatre role since her Oscar-winning turn in the 2006 film “Dreamgirls.” Her additional film and TV credits include “American Idol,” “Sex and the City,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “The Three Stooges,” “Smash,” “Black Nativity” and more. She won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album for 2008’s Jennifer Hudson.
