Actor Liam Neeson had a devout Catholic upbringing in Northern Ireland and was even named after the neighborhood priest.
However, in 2009, after his wife Natasha Richardson, 45, died in a freak skiing accident, Neeson has struggled with his faith.
“I was reared a Catholic but I think every day we ask ourselves, not consciously, what are we doing on this planet?” Neeson says. “What’s it all about?”
Neeson is currently making the rounds to promote his acclaimed new thriller, The Grey, a film about an oil drilling team that must fend for themselves in Alaska.
While filming in the Turkish town of Istanbul, the star, 59, told reporters that Islam took a hold of him, that the religion “got into his spirit.”
“The Call to Prayer happens five times a day and for the first week it drives you crazy, and then it just gets into your spirit and it’s the most beautiful, beautiful thing,” Neeson says.
“There are 4,000 mosques in the city. Some are just stunning and it really makes me think about becoming a Muslim.”
Here are five other notable white Muslims.
