World War Z

The studio is apparently counting on Brad Pitt’s star power, which is considerable, to carry World War Z to box-office victory, since there are no other recognizable names or faces in this film. And no, it’s not aliens or superheated air threatening humanity’s existence this time. It’s that old bugaboo: zombies. Apparently, they have the ability to not only organize their mayhem, but to unleash it worldwide. We’re not quite clear on exactly how zombies can destabilize governments, and we didn’t think humans really needed an assist with that, but Pitt is effective in his role as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations employee who risks life and limb to try to save his planet. –p.d. lee
