Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange finally released a statement regarding the infamous elevator attack. Although there aren’t many details on why the fight transpired, the statement suggests that they have moved on from the incident.
“We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same,” according to the statement.
But while the Carters and Solange would love for interest in the incident to dissipate, it’s highly unlikely that will occur. Every celebrity has a faux pas at some point. In most cases, the mistake is made, fans and critics react, and it eventually becomes old news.
However, there are a few mistakes that are so enormous that the prominent figure is forever attached to the mishap.
Tiger Woods will always be marred by his infidelity during his first marriage; Chris Brown has yet to shake his abusive attack on Rihanna; and Bill Clinton will always be associated with the sex act performed by Monica Lewinsky in the White House. In fact, although it happened in the late ’90s, Beyoncé makes a reference to Monica Lewinsky on her latest single “Partition.”
It proves that certain events in pop culture are destined to become watershed moments. The Jay Z and Solange scuffle falls into that category.
There are several reasons it will be difficult to forget Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange’s attack inside the elevator. First, Jay Z and Beyonce are the biggest entertainment acts in urban music. Everything that they do is magnified. Secondly, the video is the most powerful tool that keeps this story alive.
Imagine the repercussions if there was video of Tiger Woods cheating with porn stars, Chris Brown attacking Rihanna, or Bill Clinton having oral sex with an intern in the White House. It makes the story much more difficult to forget.
The Carters will continue to make great music, tour the world and earn millions. But every time you see Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange, you will think of that scuffle in the elevator. You may laugh at the irony of Jay Z being attacked by his sister-in-law, you may shake your head at the dysfunction, and you may wonder why and how Beyoncé remained so calm. But you will remember.
Because even when it’s behind you, there will always be an urge to glance back.
