Big Boi Arrested on Drug Charges in Miami: Commitment to Community Work Unquestioned

Big Boi, one-half of the multi-Grammy-winning duo OutKast, was arrested on charges of possessing illicit narcotics, specifiically ecstasy and Viagra pills. Ironically, Big Boi’s most famous acting role was that of a ruthless drug kingpin in the urban classic ATL opposite T.I., who has also been jailed on multiple drug infractions.

Born Antwan Patton, the rapper, acclaimed actor and licensed dog breeder was charged with three counts of a controlled substance and another count of possession of drug paraphernalia on Sunday, Aug. 7. The 36-year-old was also carrying MDMA, a main ingredient of ecstacy, according to the Miami-Dade County Corrections officials. He was booked with a $16,000 bond.

This episode, though serious in nature, hopefully will not deal a blow to the highly decorated entertainer and astute businessman’s recent civic involvement.  Big Boi enjoys enormous popularity and respect from Atlanta’s political and civic establishments for his very active foundation and multiple community endeavors. The 5-year-old Big Kidz Foundation has been lauded in Atlanta and nationally for helping to develop socially conscious and well-rounded youth who are exposed to different music, cultures, literature as well as opportunities to travel. Big Boi’s devotion to kids is unquestioned and may be unrivaled in hip-hop.

In fact, just a week before Big Boi’s arrest in South Florida, he hosted the likes of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, city Councilman Kwanza Hall and entertainers Jasmine Guy, Bevy Smith and new “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Marlo Hampton for his “Champion of Arts” soiree at Atlanta City Hall, a celebration of the arts gala. Not too many rappers are held in such esteem that they can attract those august individuals to their charitable events.

As of press time, the storied rapper has not been reached for comment.

The rapper is best known as part of the innovative rap duo OutKast with Andre 3000. They left a permanent mark on hip-hop history with six platinum albums and six Grammy awards, particularly the “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” masterpiece, a double-side CD which sold over 10 million copies. Big Boi also received critical acclaim for movie roles such as the T.I.-led ATL, and Idlewild starring a constellation of stars including Terrence Howard and Cicely Tyson. –terry shropshire
