After launching his own Purple Ribbon Records hip-hop label more than five years ago, Atlanta rapper Big Boi is now preparing to form a record label, Purple Kidz, with his daughter, Jordan, which is set to launch in the coming weeks.
According to billboard.com, Big Boi and Jordan are the sole partners of the label and the OutKast rapper decided to form the label with the intention of providing his daughter with a company of her own.
“My daughter just turned 16 years old, and you can see it on MTV’s [‘My Super Sweet Sixteen’], where they get cars, and things that depreciate and just don’t mean nothing,” says the 36-year-old rapper. “I wanted to give my child something that she can grow and build and nurture. So I gave her her own label.”
The first act signed to Purple Kidz is Gabbie Rae, a 12-year-old singing prodigy who’s graced the stage of “The Tyra Banks Show.”
Although the rapper will soon be guiding the careers of a slew of fresh new artists, he hasn’t forgotten about his solo career.
Despite his mentor, L.A. Reid, having stepped down as the chairman and CEO of Big Boi’s home label, Island Def Jam, the “Shutterbug” emcee explains that Reid’s replacement, Barry Weiss, is supportive and impatiently awaiting his sophomore solo album, Daddy Fat Sax: Soul Funk Crusader.
“I had a conversation with Barry Weiss, and he was like, ‘Hey Big, great album,’ and he’s ready for the next album,” says Big Boi. “And he wants it ASAP. So, you know, everything’s good.”
