Ice Cube is headed straight outta Compton to Detroit this holiday weekend for Return of the Legends 13 at Chene Park. The hip-hop heavyweight is bringing along some of his Compton crew to help him rip up the stage. Special guests include fellow N.W.A. members, MC Ren and DJ Yella, The DOC, DJ Quik and MC Eiht. Past beefs have been squashed so this show will be extra lit.
Fans, old and new, are digging the rap pioneers’ comeback. Last year’s groundbreaking film, “Straight Outta Compton,” depicted the group’s influential rise to the top that started 30 years ago. Since then, the group has gone through numerous changes. Cube is a multi-media influence with ventures in music, film and television, while Yella has returned to his passion of DJing after dabbling in the adult film industry. Earlier this year, Ren and Cube verbally throat-checked veteran rocker, Gene Simmons after he dissed N.W.A.’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Speaking of throats, despite damaged vocal chords, honorary N.W.A. member, The DOC will come through with his ‘formula’ along with OG, MC Eiht who has a collaboration with famed producer, DJ Premier in the works.
DJ Quik is now a renowned producer who has mastered tracks for several artists including 2 Pac, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and The Game. Quik recently called out rapper, YG for not giving him credit for work on the hit single “My Hitta.” He alleges that YG’s business practices don’t make ‘dollars and sense.’
Music mogul, Dr. Dre is noticeably missing from the lineup. His three solo albums recently exceeded 15 million sales—his sophomore album, 2001, is the fifth biggest selling hip-hop album in the U.S.
Hip-hop is clearly alive and well. If you’re in the D this Saturday, Sept. 3, be sure to check out the Compton legends. See additional tour dates below.
