Lozada Pledges to Change

After watching this explosive season of VH1’s “Basketball Wives,” one of the most memorable figures on the program is pledging to make a change. Evelyn Lozada, 36, has penned a letter to her adolescent self detailing the trials and tribulations she’s endured on the Shaunie O’Neal-produced program. As previously reported, Lozada, who appeared with a bevy of reality TV beauties for VIBE’s snarky “Meet Your New Role Models” story, was lambasted by critics including Star Jones who suggested a boycott of the program. After hearing of Star’s comment, Lozada lashed out in typical fashion and ripped into Jones saying, “I think she’s irrelevant. And she’s using our coattails to get relevant again. Nobody gives a [expletive] about her.” She would later issue a public apology online.

Now Lozada’s apparently turned over a new leaf and admits taking comments from Jones and others into consideration so much so that she felt moved to write about it to the Huffington Post. Speaking to herself at age 7, Lozada calls being a topic of discussion for her behavior “not one of her proudest moments” and admits that it makes her feel “painfully small.” Additionally, she says she had an “aha moment” from women like Jones who’ve forced her to consider adolescents who might be tuning in to the program.

“Dear Mija, in exactly twenty-nine years you’re going to find yourself at the middle of a mess that you unwillingly helped to create,” wrote Lozada. “You’re going to be the topic of a discussion about women on a national level that won’t be one of your proudest moments. And as large as your life may be at that time, the truth is that you’re going to feel painfully small.”

[…] “You’ll make no excuses for your actions, as a matter of fact, you’ll find yourself in tears at the Ah-ha [sic] moment Star Jones forces you to have, ” Lozada continued. “Beyond what you’ll initially perceive as a malicious attack by Star, lives a hard truth that will shake you to your core. YOU are the little girl, she’s talking about. And it hadn’t dawned on you the effects that your grown-up actions were having on the next generation of little ones who watch negative and abusive moments unfold on television.”

In addition to thanking Jones for opening her eyes to the “mountain of mistakes” she’s made, Lozada praised Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama for being positive women of color.

Do you think Lozada’s really ready to change or should she just hurry up and dry her crocodile tears? I vote the latter but we’ll ultimately seen when the next season of “Basketball Wives” returns.
