Singer Frank Ocean Comes Out, Says First Love Was a Man

Frank Ocean Speaks On His Sexuality

In a time when fans and critics alike can be unabashedly judgmental, an up and coming R&B singer is bravely seaking out on his sexuality. Frank Ocean, 24, released a lengthy letter today via Tumblr announcing that he was in love with another man one when he was 19. The confession comes just a day after a British website noted that they’d heard his forthcoming Channel Orange album and recognized that he was serenading a “he” instead of a “she” on certain tracks. “Frank has also opened up about his sexuality on the album, we think it’s brave and admire him for being so honest and sharing such a personal aspect of his life through his music,” wrote a writer for ” On the songs ‘Bad Religion’ ‘Pink Matter and ‘Forrest Gump’ you can hear him sing about being in love and there are quite obvious words used like ‘him’ and not ‘her’.

Confirming the writer’s report, Ocean took to Tumblr on this Independence Day Holiday to provide clarification. “Four summers ago, I met somebody,” wrote Ocean. “I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with.”

At the end of the letter Frank details how his love was unreciprocated and how writing the letter has given him newfound freedom. “I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore,” he writes. “I feel like a free man.”

Today’s confession has garnered Ocean a wave of support, particularly from members of his Odd Future Wolf Gang Collective. Members of the California Hip-Hop group have all responded to Ocean’s confession separately, most notably Tyler, The Creator who wrote, “F—- finally sus boy @frank_ocean. Hahahaha, you still ain’t got no b—–.” He later added, “My big brother finally f—– did that. Proud of that n—- cause I know that s—- is difficult or whatever. Anyway I’m a toilet.”
