A young girl, Rowan Hansen, 11, was granted an amazing wish when she campaigned for more female superheroes. Last month, the Champaign, Illinois, native wrote to DC Comics, voicing her disappointment with the lack of diversity among today’s most popular superheroes. “I love your comics,” she wrote (as excerpted by NBC’s “Today”), “but I would love them a lot more if there were more girls.”
“There are Superman and Batman movies, but not a Wonder Woman one,” she continued. “You have a Flash TV show but not a Wonder Woman one. Marvel comics made a movie about a talking tree and raccoon awesome, but you haven’t made a movie with Wonder Woman.”
The fifth-grader went on to question the wardrobe choice of one of DC Comics’ best known female heroes. “If Batman gets to wear armor, then why doesn’t Wonder Woman get to wear armor?” she asked. “And I know that she’s kind of invulnerable, but it would still be nicer if she didn’t wear a bathing suit all the time.”
In support of his little girl, Hansen’s father, Jim, later posted the letter online and it quickly went viral. On Jan. 30, DC Comics responded.
“Thanks Rowan. We agree, we’re working hard to create more superhero fun for girls!” DC Comics wrote via Twitter. “Yes Rowan, girls read comics too! Wonder Woman movie & Supergirl TV both in the works, with more exciting girl power announcements soon!”
But it didn’t end there. DC Comics went above and beyond, when they presented Rowan with a sketch of a new superhero, Rowan! Talk about girl power!
