Fans of NBC’s “The Voice” will no doubt remember Michelle Chamuel, the bespectacled versatile powerhouse vocalist from season four of the hit show.
Her rendition of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” during the blind audition segment garnered three of the show’s four judges (Adam Levine, Shakira, and Usher) to turn their chairs for her and plead their case to join their team. She ultimately decided to go with Team Usher after the “Good Kisser” singer told her that she was “medicine for the whole world.” That decision turned out to be a good one as Chamuel and Usher went on to make it to the final round of the show before taking second place behind Danielle Bradbery.
The exposure from the show proved to be priceless as Chamuel, a native of Wellesley, Massachusetts, has amassed a loyal following that is eagerly awaiting the release of her debut solo LP, Face The Fire, set to be released in February 2015.
Rolling out recently caught up Chamuel to discuss life on the road and her coming show at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall.
How do you balance life on the road and being creative? Does touring distract from your creativity?
Super interesting couple of questions! Life on the road for me is inherently unbalanced. There’s not much time to get healthy food, exercise, (get) sun, walk, reflect, or let the creativity flow. It’s very much go, go, go, problem solve, go! So to deal with this, I like to limit the amount of time I spend on tour. That said, I find that after tour is a great time for creative output. I like to clear some time to just be creative when I get off the road.
Who is your favorite live performer?
Man, anytime Sasha Allen sings something, it blows me away.
What is the significance of the name “Turn It Up” tour?
“Turn It Up” is a lyric from the title track off the upcoming album, Face The Fire, in response to declaring that I will face the fire! It’s also call to action. Every person that comes out to any of these shows is “turning it up” with me.
What can fans expect from your upcoming show at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall?
To be frank, every show is different in its own way, so I’m not even sure what to expect! My intention is to put on a musical experience that gives the audience an introduction to the new album and hopefully walk out of there feeling like they were a part of something positive and a larger community.
What do you love and/or are looking forward to most about Chicago?
I just love looking at Lake Michigan when I’m in Chicago. Also, I’ve had wonderful musical experiences there. Hoping to keep that up!
