Dave Chappelle had what some present described as an onstage meltdown when hecklers interrupted him and audience members attempted to tape his performance at Alonzo Mourning’s Summer Groove charity comedy event. He tried again on July 23 at the same weekend event and impressed the audience with some self-effacing humor and a couple of anecdotes about headliner Alicia Keys.
Apologizing for his “bad attitude” the night before, Chappelle introduced performer Cee Lo Green and left the stage to warm applause. Miami.com tweeted, “Second try better than the first: no hecklers and Dave Chappelle doing well at Zo Summer Groove concert. Time to call it a comeback.”
CNN analyst Roland Martin, who had live-tweeted Chappelle’s Friday night meltdown, said the comedian was in good spirits backstage.
Anyone who has followed Chappelle’s career and knows the talent with which he is endowed has to know that his comedic courage will always win out over his personal eccentricity. Kudos to Dave for getting back up there and working the crowd after a very public embarrassment.
