Executive Director, Wayne County Legal Assistance Agency
The Wayne County Legal Assistance Agency provides free legal services to indigent persons in Michigan and is a popular provider of free legal services in the city of Detroit. Although the much-lauded organization is a nonprofit, if it was a private law firm, it would rank as one of the most efficiently operated in the state of Michigan.
“We work with clients in a comprehensive manner, so that as we solve their legal problems, we help solve other problems as well. We help people rebuild their lives and families stay together,” says Deirdre Weir, LAA’s executive director. “And we have the legal talent and technology to compete with the best private firms,” she adds.
The agency’s expressed mission is to provide comprehensive, aggressive legal advocacy and representation for residents of metropolitan Detroit. If a potential litigant is of low- to moderate-income, has a legal problem and lives in Macomb, Oakland or Wayne counties, residents are encouraged to avail themselves of these valuable services.
“Our work helps clients deal with some of life’s most basic needs, like a safe home, enough food to eat, a decent education, protection against fraud and personal safety, explains Weir.
LAA, which serves approximately 15,000 residents annually, is committed to serving its clients in such a thorough and personal manner that many often state that they are satisfied with the organization’s performance regardless of the outcomes of particular cases.
