Def Jam

Chrisette Michele has grown tremendously since her 2007 debut. After going through a painful break-up and legal battle with her former boyfriend and manager, the siren’s sophomore album, Epiphany is peppered with the unmistakable burn of heartache and moving on. The wistful, “Notebook” is one of the album’s highlights and it’s innocent lyrics are buoyed by an infectious “oh oh oh” hook and crisp production. The title track is the rare kiss-off track that doesn’t sound bitter, and romanticizes the empowerment theme on the sassy and soulful “Porcelain Doll.” A strong set of songs from a stellar artist, and a healing release for a strong woman. – dusty culpepper
