The late basketball player-turned-smooth jazz artist’s eighth and final album finds him in a moody mode, unleashing fluid bass playing that stirs the soul. Most of the songs fit together evenly, but “Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up” is a distinctive take on the pop song by Barry White with vocals by country artist Toby Keith. The album moves to a surprisingly cohesive end with the gospel-affected “Grateful,” featuring Marvin Sapp. It’s a graceful coda to a charming recording career. –forrest green III
