The Internet is a wasteland for salacious
rumors. In the wake of Michael Jackson’s death, numerous celebrities
from David Hasselhoff to Mandy Moore were reported as having passed.
False. The day after he was released from custody, embattled former NFL
star Michael Vick was alleged to have gone to a strip club with NBA bad
boy Allen Iverson. False. Former “Flavor Of Love” winner, Hoopz,
allegedly had the HIV virus and was going to reveal it in an interview
with XXL magazine. False.
The
latest cyber-rumor involves glammed-up over-the-top pop star Lady Gaga.
After a video surfaced showing the “Pokerface” singer performing at
this year’s Glastonbury festival. After climbing off of a motorcycle
with her red skirt hiked up to reveal her panties, the video appears to
show a bulge of some sort, and ever since, the Web has been flooded
with claims that the British starlet is in actuality, a hermaphrodite.
Gossip site Bossip.com added to the controversy by alleging that the
singer responded to the allegations with this quote:
“It’s
not something that I’m ashamed of, [it] just isn’t something that I go
around telling everyone. Yes. I have both male and female genitalia,
but I consider myself a female. It’s just a little bit of a penis and
really doesn’t interfere much with my life. The reason I haven’t talked
about it is that it’s not a big deal to me. Like come on. It’s not like
we all go around talking about our v*******. I think this is a great
opportunity to make other multiple gendered people feel more
comfortable with their bodies. I’m sexy, I’m hot. I have both a c***
and a p*****. Big f******g deal.”
Since Gaga told Rolling Stone magazine that she considers herself
bisexual, her sexuality has been a source of constant speculation. But
this bizarre hermaphrodite controversy echoes a similar situation that
happened in late 2005. Singer Ciara was also the subject of a nasty
Internet rumor that stated that the Atlanta native had been born a
hermaphrodite and had a secret surgery at age 11. And, you guessed it,
the story was completely false. Bottom line: stop believing all of the
viral muckraking that gets passed along and don’t believe that a grainy
Webvid can provide concrete evidence as to whether or not a pop star
has both male and female genitalia.
