Since the late 1970s, Joseph’s Barbershop has been the place where students from Howard University came to debate issues on sports, dating, and black campus life in Washington, D.C. However, since the triumphant victory of Barack Obama, the students who frequent the barbershop have become enthralled in politics. As the owner of Joseph’s Barbershop, Joseph Gray has witnessed the exciting discussions firsthand. Gray recently discussed the importance of Obama’s victory and how it has changed the conversation for Howard co-eds.- amir shaw

Being located across the street from Howard University, you are accustomed to hearing the dialogue of students. What have you noticed most about their conversations since Barack Obama’s victory?
Students at Howard University are more inspired. It’s something to know that the most powerful man in the world is black and will be living in this city. You may have another black president who attended Howard University in the future.

Do you have anything planned for Inauguration Day?
I plan to participate in several events on Jan. 20. It will be special. I remember being in the shop on Nov. 4. I never thought that I would see that day. I’m very proud that a black man is president.

How does Obama change the country’s perception of black people?
He let the world know that black people are capable of doing great things. And he’s not the only black person who is qualified to be president. I think that more blacks will now get an opportunity.

You are around young black males every day. Will Obama’s victory somehow help the young men who find themselves on the wrong side of the law?
If we had more education, the kids would not deal drugs. A lot of these kids come out of school and have no choices. We have a lot going for ourselves, but sometimes we fail to recognize it. Obama will allow them to explore more options. He is going to bring changes.

Joseph Gray expects the barbershop debates on Barack Obama to increase during the next week. He believes that people from all over the world will visit his shop and join the discussion on the future impact and the historical significance of Obama’s election.
