Chris Rock on role models …
“You
know what’s weird? I look up to Will Smith … I mean, he’s a friend of
mine and he’s younger than me by like a year or two. But I’m looking at
what my man’s doing on film — how he’s challenging himself, how he’s
working on these scripts, how he’s made himself into this great actor,
and how he makes sure that he works with great directors — and I can’t
do nothing but clap my hands and let him know that he’s the man. I
can’t front on that. And he makes it easier for all of us.”
On the pressure to succeed as a black man …
“There’s
pressure with wanting to be good. I’m not crazy though. I know that if
I’m bad, it will probably adversely affect other black people … and I
guess white guys don’t have that kind of thing hanging over them. But
there’s always [the] pressure to stand out.”
On the need to be flashy …
“I’ve
never really been addicted to things. When I got on ‘Saturday Night
Live,’ I bought a Corvette, and yes that was a big deal. But I’ve never
been caught up in that stuff. Look at me — I have on no jewelry right
now. I have a watch, and I guess it’s expensive, but it’s not like it
has nuggets on it. I had two cars twenty years ago, and I’ve got two
cars right now. I’ve just never been one of those guys where I felt
like I had to buy all of this stuff.”
