The Congressional Black Caucus’ 39th Annual Legislative Conference in Washington will focus on President Obama’s contentiously debated health care reform initiative, among a plethora of other important issues, says Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., the outgoing chairperson of the CBC. Kilpatrick spoke about her deep concerns about the rising tide of hatred directed at Obama, along with the vituperative debates in the streets of America, which has created a noxious environment around the White House.
“Health care — we have to have it. The president is the leader and we are supporting him 200 percent. Unfortunately, the media reports are always negative. But our job is to go out into the communities. With 256 Democrats, representing nearly 700,000 people apiece, our job is to educate. You don’t see a lot of that covered. That’s why I’m doing this,” says Kilpatrick. “No deductions, you reduce the cost of it, the premiums, all access. It’s important that we get it — and we’re out every day, on the phones, in the streets, in town hall meetings, and doing teleconferences. Talking about it is important so that we get the real truth about what real health care is all about. Prescriptions [need to] be more affordable,” she says.
Kilpatrick says the CBC conference will also focus on job creation, restoration of our urban areas, education reform and disparate prison sentencing,
Kilpatrick will host her own panel discussion during the CBC conference at the Washington Convention Center, titled “Let Us Rise Up and Build: Real Solutions for Successful Families and Communities.”
“Leaders who have dedicated their time and talents to strengthening families and communities will share testimonies, tools, and tips aimed at helping attendees develop,” says the veteran legislator.
Kilpatrick says she’s become very concerned at the level of unchecked venom directed at President Obama.
“I just pray for him every morning that he’s safe. … It’s very disturbing and I’m very concerned [that’s] it’s going unchecked,” she says. We have to be very careful about that. That needs to be reigned in. And we need to speak up. Everyone has to be indignant and enjoying this movement of rebuilding America.” –terry shropshire
