Seven white men and women were convicted and are serving long prison terms for their involvement.
“She is recanting her entire story,” attorney Byron Potts told reporters in Columbus, Ohio, about his client. Williams moved to Ohio after the incident. “She says it did not happen. She fabricated it.” He added, “She wanted to get back at her boyfriend. She was mad at him.”
Potts said that Brewster’s son, Bobby, was the boyfriend who had beaten Williams and that she had stabbed herself with a straight razor to help embellish the story of being tortured.
Williams was found in a trailer with cuts, wounds and bruises. The suspects were a mother and a son, another mother and her daughter, and two other men. They are all currently in jail and all six pled guilty and were given terms of up to 40 years in prison. The Logan County prosecutor that handled the case, Brian Abraham, defended the convictions of the seven. “The case wasn’t based on her statements,” he told CNN.
Williams never testified and Abraham re-emphasized that the case was decided based on evidence — including “the confessions of the six defendants.”
Abraham insists that the evidence was overwhelming and it should be noted that none of the individuals filed appeals following their convictions. Abraham believes that Williams’ recantation is an attempt to generate more publicity.
