When the New York Yankees were chasing their 27th
title, some of New York’s best
and brightest artists came out to the games to pay tribute. Among those
championing the boys in stripes’ march into baseball history was none other
than Yonkers native and Queen of
Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. The MLB is taking a much hipper stance than usual,
with Blige, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Alanis Morrisette and John Legend all
performing at the games this year. Blige’s
soulful rendition of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” brought a resounding
ovation from the crowd at Yankee Stadium, and helped accent what proved to be a
stellar series for the Yanks. New York
pushed on to defeat the Phillies and claim their latest world championship, and the
sound of the entire series could not have been sweeter.
