Jazz Great returns to Detroit Jazz Cafe at Music Hall for emotional Performances

According to the New York Times “perhaps the best jazz singer alive today is a woman almost everybody seems to have missed. Her name is Mary Stallings.” While the passionate vocalist referenced in that review may not be a household name, those familiar with her say she should be.

On Nov. 20 and 21, Stallings will appear at Detroit’s Jazz Café at Music Hall to demonstrate her vocal dexterity and dazzle D-Town listeners with her expressive and emotional song stylings and phrasing. “You need to be real about [your music]. Audiences are smart. They are not going to come out to see you twice unless you are honest,” explains Stallings.

In 2005, native Detroiter, Geri Allen produced and played piano on the brilliant, Remember Love. Considered by many to be the finest recording of her career, explores the incredible range of Stalling’s voice and seamlessly its way from the up-beat to slow ballads.

“For the aspiring, young people getting into the business, I would tell them to study. Study on the bandstand. Get out and do it. Be serious. Learn your material. Learn it well,” implores Stallings, who began singing as a child in the San Francisco Bay area clubs.

Tickets for Mary Stallings with special guest, Eric Reed are $27 and available at Music Hall Box Office and at ticketmaster.com
