John H. Eaves is chairman of the Fulton County Commission and represents District 1. Chairman Eaves was elected in November 2006 to a four-year term.
What are some of the duties of your position?
I am the highest elected official in Fulton County, but more importantly, I am one of seven commissioners and we are responsible for health and human services throughout the county, as well as dealing with the oversight and funding of the library system. Third but not least, we provide funding for the criminal justice system.
What do you think about Atlanta’s new administration?
I think that we have some young dynamic, intellectual, and well experienced individuals coming on board with Kasim Reed and Caesar Mitchell. I think that they have some innovative ideas in terms of bridging the gap between public service and the needs of the citizens. One of the big problems with Fulton County and the city of Atlanta is the high number of young people who are dropping out of school and ending up in our criminal justice system. We need to grab them at an early age and try to get them to see the value in an education and working together.
How can this administration help you to obtain your goals?
It’s important for government officials to begin to work across jurisdiction lines. We as a region need to work towards economic development, dealing with health and human services and crime. There are a lot of ways that we can work together collaboratively to make Fulton County better. –christian johnson
