Serena Williams Clinches 5th Australian Open Title; Henin Falls Short

alt

Defending Champion, Serena Williams, has clinched her fifth win down under.  She became the 2010 Australian Open (AO)  winner on Saturday, defeating arch rival Justine Henin, 6–4,3–6,6–2, in a compelling two-hour match.  The win makes her a 12-time grand slam winner, a record matching that of tennis great Billie Jean King and making her the winningest player in AO history.

Williams had already taken care of the business of defending her 2009 AO doubles title the day before with her sister, Venus. They defeated world No. 1s Cara Black and Liezel Huber to become the 2010 doubles champions. This year’s AO belonged to the Williamses.

Inspired by Kim Clijsters, who won the US Open after a lengthy absence, Henin was looking to put the finishing touches on her fairytale run. She retired from the sport almost 2 years ago and returned to win her second AO title and 8th slam overall. She made an impressive run up to the final match, but ran into the brick wall of Serena Williams.

In the tourney’s closing ceremony, Williams was presented with her AO trophy and a check for $2 million by the legendary Margaret Court, 67. Court holds the distinction of owning the most titles of any women’s tennis player in the history of the sport. Her first win earned her an umbrella and her second, a make-up case. My, how things have changed. Congrats to the new champ. –gerald radford
