The earthquake that ravaged Haiti one month ago led to an outpouring of support for the beleaguered Caribbean nation from around the world. According to Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, the death toll from the Haiti earthquake has topped 200,000. The Atlanta Hawks recently provided insight on how they are helping the victims of this tragedy.

Forward Josh Smith:

“People’s lives are really in jeopardy. I just feel bad for those people over there. I know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel [for Haiti] because everyone’s trying to lend a helping hand. It’s a tragedy. I’ve contributed, but I’m not done contributing.”

Head coach Mike Woodson:

“Anytime you have an opportunity to raise money for a good cause, it’s fantastic. The NBA has done some things. … My wife and I are going to put some things together too. [There’s] a lot of money being filtered over there and we’re going to add to the cause, too.”

Guard Mike Bibby:

“It’s sad. I just try to give as many donations as possible. I can’t even explain because I don’t know [all the circumstances]. I just feel sorry for them.”

Forward-center Al Horford:

“I think as a professional athlete, I’m able to impact a lot of lives and make a big difference. It’s real sad and unfortunate what happened over there. Me, and a group of other athletes started by Alonzo Mourning donated some money to the funds over there. It’s very unfortunate but we’ve got to help in any way we can. They need a lot of help down there. I hope that people really step up. Anything that you can give, give because the people down there really need it.”

Guard-forward Joe Johnson raised money for every point he scored at the Jan. 23 game against Charlotte in an effort to help contribute to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund:

“I [donated] $1,000 per point and I had 19 points [during that game]. I’m very saddened about it. I’m reaching out. I’m trying to do whatever I can to better the situation.”
