Nicki Micheaux, Star of Showtime Drama ‘Rain,’ Says Bahamas’ Ills Solvable

The Bahamas is a place of and fun from what is shown on television, but according to actress Nicki Micheaux, the island has a very ugly truth.  Micheaux became acquainted with the dark part of the island while filming her new movie “Rain.”
The drama stars Micheaux, Renel Brown, Irma P. Hall and CCH Pounder, and is about a young girl who travels to Nassau Bahamas to reunite with her biological mother.  Micheaux plays the drug addicted mother who abandons her child, only to have that same child come to her aid.
“Alcoholism is rampant. Drug addiction is rampant. And the poverty sort of adds to the pressure…I say there’s a real problem, but it’s solvable because we send so much money down there in tourism. Pirates of the Caribbean shoots there. Many big Hollywood movies shoot there. It’s just about raising our hand and holding that government accountable. That’s it because the money’s there,” says Micheaux of the countries current state.

While filming the movie, Micheaux became acquainted with a side of the island that is not readily apparent or visible to tourists, who typically don’t venture outside the ritzy resorts. It was a real eye-opener for the thespian.
“Alcoholism is rampant. Drug addiction is rampant. And the poverty sort of adds to the pressure … I say there’s a real problem, but it’s solvable because we send so much money down there in tourism,” Micheaux says.

Micheaux further opines that the solution to many of the island’s problems is literally in Hollywood’s hands.

Pirates of the Caribbean shoots there. Many big Hollywood movies shoot there. It’s just about raising our hand and holding that government accountable. That’s it, because the money’s there,” says Micheaux of the country’s current condition.
