While other females floss the long and straight look, silky singer Chrisette Michele is now rocking the short and nappy.
What’s more, unlike other singers and females who went with the clean dome, Michele’s decision to lop off her auburn-tinted tresses was not part of some sleek marketing campaign or done for shock value. Her choice is rooted in cultural consciousness and mere pragmatism.
“I was tired of black sistas [being] subject[ed] to having their hair pressed and straightened, and damaged, with relaxers, and heat,” she said following a concert at Albany State University recently. “So I wanted to make short and nappy hair fashionable, and let the industry know that there is nothing wrong with the texture that we have been born with. So I plan to grow it out to the big beautiful nappy hair that I have.”
There have been several high-profile artists who have donned the bald look in recent years, most notably Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Janelle Monae and Britney Spears, although the latter was a result of a mental meltdown.
