Brother of Former Yankee Pitcher ‘El Duque’ Hernandez Murders 4 and Wounds 3

altThe the half-brother of former New York Yankees pitcher Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, Gerardo Regalado, killed his wife, Liazan Molina, and three other women this past Sunday before killing himself according to Miami police. Described as a man on a murderous rampage, he shot and killed the three women and wounded three additional women at Yoyito’s Cafe in Hialeah before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting started in the parking lot outside the restaurant. Witnesses say that Regalado was seen arguing with Molina, his wife of three years. He fled the scene in an SUV owned by one of the victims. That vehicle was later found a few blocks away, where officers found Regalado dead. His brother was once a pitcher for both the New York Yankees and Mets.

“He went straight for the women,” Hialeah police Detective Eddie Rodriguez said, adding that  “It was some sort of domestic dispute.”

Witnesses also stated that he avoided men in the restaurant taking aim at the women only.

Regalado immigrated from Cuba to the United States in 2006. Hernandez’s agent, Mike Maulini, said  “We do not know what might have happened. He was a good kid. Since he arrived he has tried not to depend on his brother and do his own work”

The Hernandez family offered their condolences to the families of the women in a statement.

The women killed inside have been identified as Maysel Figueroa, 32; Lavina M. Fonseca, 47; and Zaida Castillo, 56. The wounded women — Mayra Delacaridad, 55; Ivet Coronado Fernandez, 36; and Yasmine Dominguez — have been hospitalized and are said to be in critical condition. Police have yet to reveal a motive for the shooting. –torrance stephens, ph.d.
