1) James Evans Sr. – John Amos

For three seasons, John Amos portrayed James Evans Sr. on “Good Times.” Evans was tough and warmhearted enough to keep his three kids on the straight and narrow while raising them in the roughest housing project in Chicago. Although Evans only had a sixth grade education, he offered keen advice to his kids about life and was fiercely protective. He slides in at the top spot on this list because of his ability to handle real-life adversity and maintain a loving household.

2) Heathcliff Huxtable – Bill Cosby

Cliff Huxtable was America’s favorite TV dad during the ‘80s. He used sharp wit to challenge his kids and allowed them to think their problems through without being overbearing. Huxatable was an advocate for higher education and never allowed his kids to use excuses for poor performance in school. As an obstetrician, Huxtable was a shining example of black achievement and pushed the importance of family values.

3) Uncle Phil – James Avery

Philip Banks (James Avery) was often antagonized by Will Smith’s goofy antics on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Although Will and the other kids viewed Philip as being out of touch with their generation, he was a caring provider and saved them from several awkward situations. Phil once used his legal expertise to save Will and Carlton from being charged with auto theft, and he proved his street credibility when he hustled a pool shark who took Will’s money because of a gambling debt.

4) Julius Rock – Terry Crews

As the father of Chris Rock in the sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris,” Julius Rock (Terry Crews) set an example for kids by showing them the value of hard work. He also taught them the value of money by finding imaginative ways to remain frugal. Julius was never shown being physical when punishing his kids, but he did claim to have a belt for every possible offense.

5) George Jefferson – Sherman Hemsley
Although George Jefferson was unapologetic about being a jerk, he was a self-made businessman who always provided proper guidance to his only son, Lionel. Thanks to George’s ideology of hard work, Lionel graduated from college and eventually became a successful engineer.
