If you are a water sports lover what better way to cool off, relax and get your groove on than on a water jet ski. Available for rental at most docks and marina’s they are becoming increasingly popular on Chicago’s Lake Michigan. Sailing, canoeing and dock parties are happening wherever there is a large body of water that is accessible and has convenient parking.
One such recent event was attorney David “Toni”Sheltons 2010 Dock Party which was held over the Fourth of July holiday weekend at the 59th Street harbor on Chicago’s South Side. It is where most African American boat enthusiasts dock their boats and there you’ll find everything from 20-foot speed or fishing boats, to elegant 60-foot yachts. The harbor also hosts the Mecca jazz music series on Monday nights during the summer.
Just behind the Museum of Science and Industry you can take a tour of the museum, have a picnic and enjoy a dock party all on one date. Another good date look is the Shedd Aquarium located in Chicago’s Grant Park which offers an excellent display of sea life without getting wet. Patrons and visitors can also enjoy a cooling jazz set complete with wine and hors d’oeuvres during the summer. For a neighborhood weekend music event catch the Black United Fund’s Plaza Summer Universal Jazz series Saturdays in July and August at 1900 east 71st in the Chicago South Shore community.
But you don’t have to live in Chicago to party like you do. Most cities have park districts that can direct you to the various rivers lakes and even the ocean if you are on the west or east coasts. Washington D.C. has the Potomac River and Detroit lies adjacent to the Great Lakes. With a variety of related activities such as fishing, water skiing and swimming, you can’t miss having one enjoyable day after the next.
