On July 10 in Oakland, Calif., a man was arrested after an atrociously violent incident of child abuse was witnessed by a large group of people, including an off duty police officer. Witnessesses reported seeing a man shake and throw a 2-year-old into the street in front of oncoming traffic. The child was run over near 5th Avenue and 15th Street.
Raymond Pisano, who ran over the child, described it as “shocking … incredibly shocking. The whole thing was horrifying.” Pisano noted that his wife did all that she could to help the toddler.
The child’s 21-year-old father, whose name has yet to be released, has been booked into jail on charges of resisting arrest and child endangerment, according to his brother, Demarion English.
Witnesses stated that after the incident, they observed the suspect running down the street, bumping into cars until the police arrived and used a taser to control him.
English, the child’s uncle, said that his brother “has PTSD, a post-traumatic stress disorder,” and that he had been “in group homes for a long time.” He still cannot believe what happened and is having a difficult time accepting that his brother would hurt his own daughter.
Ironically, the little girl only suffered some bruises and minor contusions. She is doing well and has been released from the hospital. –torrance stephens, ph.d.
