Tasha Hill’s lawyer says that people who torture dogs are usually given more time in prison than the white man who severely beat her at a Cracker Barrel in Morrow, Ga. as her 7-year-old daughter watched.
On Sept. 9, 2009, Hill and her daughter was leaving the restaurant when Troy West almost hit Hill’s daughter with the door. After words were exchanged, West punched, kicked and yelled racial slurs at Hill until she was beaten unconscious. Hill’s young daughter screamed and was the only person who attempted to stop the man from beating her.
West could have faced 44 years in prison for the attack, but he plead guilty and struck a deal with the prosecution to get his felonies reduced to misdemeanors. Although West was sentenced to six months in prison, he was released after serving only 43 days.
The injustice that has taken place with this case should cause a national outcry and force citizens to question the U.S. Justice Department on why it failed to charge West with a hate crime. Minorities should also call for a boycott of all Cracker Barrels because the restaurant failed to protect Hill and it has a history of practicing racial bias.
Hill is currently suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and its highly likely that her daughter will also be affected by witnessing such a traumatic event at a tender age. –amir shaw
