Black Baker Andra Hall, Owner of CamiCakes, Discusses Entrepreneurialism and Her Love of All Things Sweet

Andra Hall believes that the recession actually helped her business and she proved it when her bakery grossed nearly $1.1 million in 2009. Since opening the doors of CamiCakes in 2006, her longtime passion for baking has now turned into a viable business with an incredible return on her investment. The bakery, named for her daughter, Camille, has had dessert lovers clamoring at her doors for the delectable delights. Hall says the most popular flavors are red velvet, sweet potato and carrot cake. Though her rapid growth has been one of her greatest challeneges and she usually works long days, the confectioner took a break to speak with rolling out about the sweet world of cupcakes. –tammie reed

Was opening CamiCakes what you always wanted to do?

Yes it was. I had just had my daughter and she had some problems, so I was trying to think of a full time job to pay my bills and still be able to take care of her. Baking was it and now my dream is a reality.

Is this a family run business?

Yes, my husband and I work together. He was in the mortgage business and we all know how that’s going right about now. So now, yes, both of us run the company.

Do you plan on expanding?

Well, we have two stores in Jacksonville, Fla., and one in Atlanta and we are looking for a fourth location.

Did you have any culinary training?

No, baking was just second nature for me. I would bake cakes and more for stress relief at home. I used to make speciality cakes for people, but it’s very time consuming. Wedding cakes can take up to two days, but with cupcakes, it’s much easier. When I decided to open CamiCakes, I knew I could produce one product effectively.

Finish this sentence: Don’t you ever …

Don’t you ever do something just for money. Be honest with yourself, and follow your heart. Make sure you always have a plan and a road map.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at CamiCakes?

Well I’m here at least 12 hours a day six days a week. When I’m not here, I love to catch up on TV shows and read magazines. I just like to do pretty much nothing but relax.
