The Diplomats have held a spot as one of the top New York hip-hop crews since 2002. While other crews from the Big Apple such as Murder Inc. and G-Unit have experienced a shift in momentum, the Diplomats collective (Cam’ron, Jim Jones and Juelz Santana) continues to serve a strong fan base that consistently supports every album or mixtape they release.
Jim Jones is the latest Diplomats member to release an album. Titled Capo, the album offers much of what’s expected from Jones — a slew of rhymes that highlight his thoughts on street life, hustling and partying.
However, Jones throws his fans a curve with his first single, “Perfect Day.” The song features a hook and production inspired by alternative rock. The song is dedicated to cancer victims and U.S. troops.
Jones gets back to the basics on “The Paper,” “Carton of Milk,” and “Drops Is Out.”
Wyclef lends his voice to “God Bless The Child,” and Ashanti proves that she can still do a hip-hop song justice on the intense track, “Changing The Locks.”
Jim Jones will never be mentioned among the best lyricists in hip-hop, but he has a firm grasp on catchy street rhymes and party anthems. The combination allows him to supply his fans with a sufficient fix until the next Diplomats project is released.
