Spring 2011 Denim Trend: Flare Jeans

Spring 2011 Denim Trend: Flare Jeans

Skinny jeans are no longer the only cool denim to wear. This spring, runways have brought back the flare and wide-leg jeans. It’s safe to say they aren’t just for hippies anymore. Celebrities such as Ciara, Zoe Saldana, Garcelle Beauvais and Eva Marcille have been spotted wearing wide-leg jeans.

The high-waisted, flared look is infinitely more flattering than the skinnies that have dominated for years. Paired with a fitted top and chunky platform heels, they will give you the appearance of having legs for miles. Here are some styling tips on how to rock this ’70s-inspired staple. –mckenzie harris

  • One word:  Heels! Wide flares need height to carry them off. So, unless you have skyscraper legs, wearing them with flat sandals is a fashion faux pas. Platforms and wedges are great options to try and are much easier to walk in than ordinary stilettos.
  • Pair with tops that are tucked into the waist for an up-to-the minute look. Wear them with a baggy blouse, a simple tee or fine knit — tucked in at the waist — and accentuate the waistline even more.
  • Go for slimming kick-flare styles if you are shorter. Long-legged women can wear the full flare. Although most cuts have a high-rise waist, styles that sit lower on the torso are more flattering for those with wide hips.
  • Bold colors are definitely a trend this spring and summer. Go out of your comfort zone and try a pair of bold color flares in pink, purple, orange or red. Pair with a clean white T-shirt or soft neutrals to tone down really saturated shades.

Don’t Forget to Get the Right Cut

High-waisted ’70s styles give the impression of a slimmer stomach and hips and do wonders for muffin tops. Flares are especially good for top-heavy women as they balance out the silhouette. Shorter women should wear flares with caution, however, but a high-heel shoe will give more proportion.
