Yes, you read it right, folks. The next time you go to throw away that pop can or that old CD, you might want to take a closer look at it, turn that “trash” into something fashionable, and feel good that you are helping the environment.
On April 6, I attended the Atlanta launch of the National Eco-Fashion Exhibition held at Environment Furniture in Midtown. I got a chance to get a sneak peek of eight dazzling, unique fashion designs from the exhibit.
The designer, artist and environmental educator Nancy Judd, has worked in recycling management for more than 20 years. She also creates couture fashions made from trash.
Judd’s “trashy designs” began when, one day, she decided to participate in a trash fashion contest, and the love affair began. Judd wanted to inspire people to view garbage differently and to consider the possibility that “waste does not exist, only wasted resources.” It helped that Judd has a background in design and also loves to sew.
Her latest creation is a environmental stewardess outfit made from worn out leather seat covers, blankets and safety cards. She explained that Delta Airlines saved the materials for her and that her work is on display at the airports. She wanted to put her creations there because so many people go through airport. Very smart. If you are ever in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, stop by and see her display at International Concourse E now through April 2012.
Also on display was an Obama & Jellyfish dress made out of plastic, a Rusty Nail cocktail dress, a plastic bathing suit, a Tireless couture dress made of inner tubes and tires, an Aluminum Drop dress made from recycled Coca-Cola cans that were hand cut into leaves, petals and vines, and a faux fur coat made from old CDs and cassette tapes. –tammie reed
