You’re headed to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival with your besties. The tickets for the concerts have been purchased, the accommodations have been booked (can you say 4-star luxury in the French Quarter) and you’ll be tipping around in your sexiest halter and stilettos. But what you might not quite have under wraps is a strategy for dealing with the effects of the Crescent City’s legendary humidity on your hair. Let’s just say its epic.

The first line of defense when dealing with curly or kinky hair in regards to heat and humidity is to wear a hairstyle that allows the hair to shine in its natural state. If going au naturel is not your preference, there are several possible solutions to combating the steam bath you’re about to plunge your hair into.

Braids, twists or an updo are great styles for kinky hair.

It’s a wrap: Wrap your hair in colorful scarves that complement your outfit.

Funky hats: A jaunty straw chapeau is always a fashion do — especially when your hair is a don’t.

If you don’t want to try one of those options, then you’d better stock up on hair products that will enhance the natural curl in your hair.
